11/8/2022 0 Comments Darktable for mac![]() It seems more like a form of ranching than a way of empowering people. #Darktable for mac how to#It just seems like there's a little too much eagerness to create a weird divide, a population that only knows how to do anything via a proprietary interface that somebody owns and alters seemingly on a whim. I'm absolutely not saying that there shouldn't be other interfaces to whatever chunks of data make one's world go 'round, there are all kinds of reasons why there are and should be. given that, it seems a little bit weird to me that there's such a strong push to enforce additional alienating layers of abstraction on what is still, for the time being, the underlying human-friendly "reality" of how we work with data. Real geeks are decompiling firmware or engineering new polymers or whatever. I wouldn't describe myself as a geek at all, just a tool-using monkey (ok, with more random curiosity than average) who tries to have a relationship to the tools we use nowadays that doesn't consist entirely of "just poke at the shiny buttons that some nice evil wizard somewhere arranged to put in front of you". not geeky people, just your average office dweller. People managed to get their heads around this way of interracting with data and worked with it for many years. ![]() On a more on-topic, practical level, I would point out that the concept of a heirarchical directory structure (whether presented as "folders within folders" or not) wherein chunks of binary data ("files") are "located" (sometimes even described as "physically located") is already a human-friendly abstraction. I try to channel my energy as constructively as I can these days, but I understand the need for catharsis, trust me.and I agree, most attempts at "making things easy" either go way too far in ways that are misguided or downright exploitative, or fail to realistically grasp where an "average person" is coming from, and the implications for how people are being conditioned to relate to the actual workings of the things they increasingly depend on are. You didn't deserve that!Ĭlick to expand.Nah, there's plenty to rant about in that arena. #Darktable for mac full#Unless Linux is only for geeks and that is the full mission and vision for its future.Īnyway, I probably over-shared. Asking a question on a board about an app or the OS? Stop telling me to file bug reports or saying it's a known problem as if that is the answer to my question, or answering every question with "Open CLI, then blah blah script blah blah.". It needs the guiding hands of seriously respected people who have a true feel for the non-geek perspective. I still think that Linux in all its forms suffers from geekism, and the people who think they have made it ever so user friendly, actually haven't. Linux is something I carry a positive feeling about, and I have tried it a couple of times over the years but not in recent years. Not to mention the ridiculous things that apps like iTunes do to one's folders and files.Ĭoming from Windows, I found it more transparent and respectful to the user than MacOS - although my life has become more peaceful since I am no longer constantly exposed to the word 'driver'. ![]() of which darktablerc, I learned, is one, and so won't even come up in a search on Finder. There is no in-between where you get treated with respect. Users are apparently either total geeks who live and breathe CLI, or idiots who need to be saved from their own stupidity. But that is not the worst thing about MacOS for me the worst thing is the condescension. app 'file' is a container.Īs for worst file system ever, I'll take that at face value, especially hearing it from 'Mr Linux' to whom I am partial. Well I'm living and learning by the minute. ![]()
